Interesting Article

18 Dec

So as all of us who have read or followed the shootings last week went through a range of emotions and thoughts, I came across the following article.

As a teacher for more than 10 years, there was always the thought in the back of my mind that something like this could happen.  Every teacher knows that it can happen, but we never fully believe that it will happen at our school.  I say that to say that I’m not really sure what my feelings about the subject are.  Feel free to enlighten me on what you think about the above said plan.

Having been a teacher as wel as having kids in the public school system and being a holder of a concealed handgun license….I think it would be better to have an armed cop on the premise at all times instead of arming teachers. Several reasons why: I’ve met a lot of stupid teachers (sorry but its true), there would be an issue of where the gun would be kept in the classroom away from little hands accidentally getting it as well as older teens getting it, cops have way better training, just one armed cop is a good deterent because criminals are cowards and they look for the easiest targets (notice they attack at seemingly safe places, places where guns aren’t allowed…they never shoot up a police station!).
At the same time, what we need to do in this country is work better at identifying and helping those with mental disorders. We need to work on teaching gun safety and responsibility. I hate to be the one to say it but the mom knew her son was unstable. So much so that she planned to have him committed to a home in another state in the near future. Why then did she leave all of her guns where he could get to them!?! I feel sad for her that she obviously needed help with him but I also feel upset that this (at least this magnitude) could have been averted.
Yes, we own several guns. Some passed on thru the family, some for personal and/or home protection. And we also own a very big and heavy gun safe that uses a code to be opened. And our kids do not know the code, nor do we let them near it when we open it so that they do not ever see the code. That said, we have discussed gun safety with them several times.
OK, that’s just my 2 cents (and maybe a bit more! Lol)
